Japan, Edo Period (1603–1868 A.D.) 18th Century
A rare and complete silk temple banner, plain weave with gilt gold paper weft patterning (ginran). The dark blue ground is richly decorated with confronting dragons over crashing waves, centering on a flaming pearl—an auspicious Buddhist motif symbolizing wisdom and spiritual power.
Dimensions: 17 feet in length (208" × 27" / 533 × 69 cm).
